[edit] Description
Mega trees, in general terms, are tall trees (10+ ft) with lights that can be manipulated by a light controller board. They can be natural trees but are most often constructed by a hobbyist consisting of any from a few strands of lights to thousands of lights with dozens of channels.
[edit] Channel Design
Wedge - Lights are strung vertically from the base to the top. An extra length of light string can be strung back to the base as needed.
Double Wedge - Similar to the wedge, but the string of lights continues over the top and down the other side.
Layer - Lights are strung horiztonally around the radius of the tree. Then stacked to create the layers of channels.
[edit] DIY Construction
The main pole is the basis of construction. For smaller trees with lower light counts, PVC may suffice. Fence rail can be obtained for a slightly higher price (about $8 for an 8-ft section), so use it or something stronger if possible.
Another factor affecting the selection of the main pole is the height of the mega tree. In order to assemble the tree, the lights must either be attached with the pole fully assembled, or the top of the tree must be raised with all the lights attached. This decision is mostly affected by the tools available. If erecting a 20-ft tree, a large ladder or some other means must be available to attach the lights in place. Otherwise, a telescoping flag pole, pulleyed tree top, or other solution must be used.
